how did panic attacks turn into panic disorder?

Posted by admin on September 24th, 2008 and filed under panic attacks disorder |

for you… or does anyone know what commonly makes panic attacks become panic disorder.THANKS

For me it started young but it didnt get bad until I was around 17. At first I just had attacks when I was around too many people or in a stessful situation. I never got help for it and it turned into a dissorder. I would have very bad panic attacks when I was in a hospital, which I have been alot for my depression and suicidal thoughts. They started me on medicine that did help but I stopped taking it a while ago. I now get panic attacks when I am at interviews or in a very large group of people. Just thinking about it in deep thought can cause a panic attack for me.

Panic disorder when the FEAR of having a panic attack starts causing a problem.

Like, if you had intially had panic attacks at the grocery store it might get to a point where even the thought of having to go into one triggers a panic attack so you avoid them.

That's a kind of simple explanation - and there's more to it. Not everyone who has panic attacks will develop a panic disorder. And if you get help early, it hopefully won't get that far.

    I'm a psych major :)

Edit: I'm going to clarify it a little bit with the help of wikipedia because 2 conditions must be met for it to be classified as panic disorder, instead of just panic attacks. If this is the case for the person below me, it isn't apparent because she just said that she had lots of attacks.

    Must meet both conditions:

    1. recurrent unexpected panic attacks

    2. at least one of the attacks has been followed by 1 month (or more) of one (or more) of the following:
    * persistent concern about having additional attacks
*worry about the implications of the attack or its consequences (e.g., losing control, having a heart attack, "going crazy")
*significant change in behavior related to the attacks
